Best thing I've seen in a long time -- the LightKeeper Pro: http://www.lightkeeperpro.com/. Quickly fix mini bulb lite sets that have a string not working. Home Hardware has them; couldn't find them listed on Cdn Tire website.

Since mini bulb sets work in series, a broken bulb turns off the subset. This little device can usually fix the subset immediately (leaving just the broken bulb off). If it can't, you can audibly trace down the line to the defective bulb.
My wife spent almost 2 hrs this weekend trying to get her favourite outdoor reindoor set working (one string of bulbs was out). She was ready to cry from frustration. With the LightKeeper, I fixed the set in 30 seconds; everything works now, except the one defective bulb (which was easy to spot).
Given the value of your time, the $19.99 cost of this device is cheap. Everyone we show it to wants one, because they have a mini-bulb set at home that isn't working.
